EC! HomeArticlesBusiness and Operations: Working with Job Shops

Updated: 3/25/22

By: Chris

This section is about the operational, organizational and personnel dealings involved in the composites industry. It is by no means exhaustive, and for general business operations there are much better resources! I am in no way qualified to tell you how to keep your books or run payroll – or even send invoices on time for that matter.

If you run a composites-related business and would like to share your experiences, please get in touch! I am eager to include your perspective either as a separate article or as an addition to things I have written. Managing people and operational complexities in this line of work is never easy, so the more we can help each-other as participants in the composites industry, the stronger the industry as a whole will be.

Topics

  • Working with Job-Shops
  • What is “Lean”?
  • How to Not Be a Crappy Boss
  • Buying Materials
  • Bringing a Composites-Intensive Product to Market
  • What is “5S” and why it can help you even if you just call it “being organized and cleaning up.”
  • Getting Work

This section, like all of EC! is a work in progress. I plan to keep adding to it as I can for a long time… and it will never be “done.”

My Limited Experience and Perspective

Information expressed here is based on my experiences and is only intended to express my perspective on business and operational challenges. I hope it is helpful – but I make no promises that it will work for you! I’m not an MBA or a lawyer or an accountant – just a guy who’s made plenty of mistakes and earned some experience along the way.

If you want to call BS on something I have written, please send me an email! I’d love for the opportunity to learn from you.
