LAMINATE SAMPLE #18: Vacuum Bagged E-glass / Epoxy with Thin Core

EC! LAMINATE SAMPLE #18:

  • Reinforcement: 6oz (200g) woven e-glass
  • Resin: Entropy Resins CLR / CLF epoxy
  • Core: 1/8″ (3mm) Divinycell H-80 PVC foam

Panel weight: 4.13 oz per square foot / 1.25kg per square meter

Thickness 0.145″ / 3.7mm

OVERVIEW:

Take laminate sample #17 and add core – then vacuum bag. This is it! Showing how much weight increases with core and how much additional resin is needed. In this case, probably a little bit more resin on the bottom skin would have been good because there were pinholes.

This panel is a good starting point for non-structural coverings, fairings and shells for a variety of applications. You could substitute carbon for the glass and have more stiffness for the same weight – but more money!

Check out laminate sample #12 for a very light pre-preg panel with a honeycomb core. Also laminate sample #3 shows an infused panel of similar thickness but much heavier because of thicker skins and heavy Soric core.

THINGS TO IMPROVE:

Major defect: pinholes on the mold surface side. How to fix… maybe coat surface or use more resin. More rolling?
